Photobiomodulation is regulation of cellular processes with the help of precicely determined light regimes.

In therapeutic purposes the red and near infra-red (Near Infra Red – NIR) spectrum lights are most commonly used. Red and NIR LED-diodes emit light in a broadband area of light spectrum (600-1000 nm) in frequency bands of 20-25 nm width (wider spectrum special performances are also possible). To cover multiple bands at once (e.g. one band in the red area and the other in the NIR area) several different diodes must be used or one diode that emits different wave lenghts at once.

The main reason for light source usage, that emits light in the red spectrum is the fact that hemoglobin does not absorb this kind of light, thus making it possible for it to penetrate into the deep tissue. This part of the spectrum does not have harmful effects, taking into account the restrictions of light regimes. Expertly, the light in this area is called the »phototherapy window«. The light that shines in the phototherapy window can thus be absorbed into our cells, leading to tissue reaction and therapeutic effects.


Our tissue absorbs light on specific wavelengths. These are wavelengths of the light spectrum which range from 600 to 1000 nm. This part of the spectrum penetrates deep into subcutaneous tissues and affects damaged cells. This kind of irradiation does not have any harmful effects and we can see it as red light. In medicine, treatment with light sources using appropriate wavelengths is called phototherapy. Red light has showed the best results in reconstruction of the tissue and in reduction of pain and swelling. Our cells contain special photoreceptor molecules – cytochrome c oxidases, which are enzymes of the respiratory chain in the mitochondria. Mitochondria are cells organelles which supply cells with energy. This happens in the respiratory chain, which is a very important process in our cells, composite from a string of biochemical reactions. Phototherapy begins with reception of the photon, which is a key signal for the start of the process and ends with the synthesis of a special molecule – adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which bounds energy necessary for normal cell function. The respiratory chain is therefore a very important process in our cells.

Photobiomodulation enables substantial organism support with maintaining body homeostasis.


Several scientific researches, including clinical researches, confirm the influence of light concerning disease and injury healing. Light contributes to maintaining or reestablishing the balance in our organisms on the cellular level where it:

  • Has an antioxidant effect and contributes to cell protection against free radicals 
  • Has an effect on proteins which protect cells from degenerative processes 
  • Increases the erythrocyte osmotic immunity, thus preventing hemolysis 
  • Has an effect on growth factors of nerves, microvascular system and also muscle and ligament tissue 
  • Regulates inflammation, immune response and circadian rhythms 
  • Supports tissue repair 
  • Stimulates local blood circulation 
  • Supports the lymphatic system

Light has a positive effect on damaged mechanisms, thus significantly accelerating recovery. The irradiated spot has better circulation. This improves cell metabolism and stimulates a regenerative effect on tissue. It can be used as an independent or additional therapy.

Recommended parameters of photabiomodulation/ technical specifications

Phototherapy window: from 600 to 1000 nm Energy flow density: from 0,5 J/cm² to 5J/cm². Most common 2,5-5J/cm². Power density: from 5 mW/cm2 to 100 mW/cm². Most common from 10 mW/cm² to 30 mW/cm² for surface tissue, for deeper joint and muscle tissue from 30 mW/cm² to 80 mW/cm².

Irradiation with the red and NIR-light increases the level of energy in the injured cell so that it can reestablish the mechanisms required for faster regeneration of injured tissue.

Pain reliever

For irradiation of a part of our body in distress we choose the seventh frequency on the BFStimulator, which has a distinctive pain relieving function.


Lower back pains

In general the lower frequencies stimulate cell activity and regeneration, while the higher frequencies are meant to soothe and abolish pain. Light has an effect on the activity of C-fibers. The increase of endorphin synthesis and the decrease of bradykinin is reflected in the reduction of pain.


RED and  NIR light regulate skin inflammation and microcirculation of blood and lymph. Affected skin regenerates faster and scarring is reduced. Our immune response is improved. Secretion of sebum, impact of hormones on our skin and metabolism are regulated. Skin detoxification is accelerated by increasing secretion of metabolic waste products.



Light soothes skin inflammation and stimulates regeneration. This  is also intended for healing and regeneration of skin after ablative cosmetic procedures and modulation of skin inflammation after depilation. The program can also be used for soothing redness, itchiness and pain and for faster replacing of damaged tissue with healthy tissue. It is also appropriate for additional allergic dermatitis healing.


Irradiation with program number 12 prevents the formation of herpes bubbles in the initial stage and stimulates ulcer healing. It also has a local viricide effect. For treating herpes in our oral cavity we use program 15.


Skin rejuvenation

Light is intended for improving skin texture and reducing enzyme mmp 1 collagenase activity, thus preventing collagen fiber injury. Because of the influence on endorphin, enkephalin and anti-stress hormones the skin gets a rested and rejuvenated glow. The stimulation of blood and lymph circulation supplies skin with nutrients and oxygen.

Musculoskeletal pain

The pain relieving function of light releases metabolic products through detox mechanisms. By irradiation the blood and lymph flow are stimulated which enables the cells of injured tissue to recieve sufficient oxygen and nutrients for regeneration.


Menstrual cramps

They can cause severe pains, which can last for several hours or even longer. Beside the stomach pains, fatigue and back pain may occur. Doctors solve these problems by prescribing contraception pills and painkillers. But if you wish to avoid the usage of pharmaceutical products, light radiation in the phototherapy window is an excellent choice for the listed problems.

Sports injuries

They emerge because of the incorrect training methods, structural irregulations, muscle, tendon and ligament weakness. The injury can also be a consequence due to chronic wear when the tissue is overburdened by the repetitive movements.  


Light stimulation

It effects the self-rostorative process in the cell, therefore contributing to the restoration of muscal, ligament, bone and cartilage tissue that has been injured. It reduces the level of the creatine kinase enzyme, which emerges due to intensive excercise leaving muscle tissue injured. 


Inflammatory prcesses

Photobiomodulation effects the restoration and organization of collagen fibers after an injury, thus preventing scarring of the injured tissue while healing. Irradiation accelerates secretion of metabolism waste products, which arise as a consequence of inflammatory processes, for example lactic acid. 

Plantar fasciitis

We recognize it as a stabbing pain on the inner-bottom side of our heels, that can spread towards the arch of the foot and toes. The reason for this occurence are small injuries of the plantar fascia or aponeurosis, the ligament structure, which stretches from the calcaneus towards our toes and supports the arch of the foot.


Achilles tendon

Injuries emerge due to the overload of forces effecting the tissue. The pain can also be a consequence of microscopic tears of the tendon or it's membrane. Irradiation presents an effective therapy because of the deep-conditioning effect of photobiomodulation, which alleviates pain, reduces inflammation and improves flexibility. We irradiate the sore spot on our body.

Rheumatic diseases

Emiting light on painful joints especially from the back side (knee crease, elbow crease, over our knuckles). We also irradiate the sides of our joints.



The red and NIR light ease the inflammation and pain. Irradiation improves the function of motor elements in joints and decreases stiffness, fatigue and swelling.



LED irradiation in one of the possible methods of additional health care concerning patients suffering from osteoarthritis of large joints. There are many beneficial effects of photobiomodulation on regeneration of joint ingredients on the cellular level. These effects have a positive influence on the lives of patients with initial osteoarthritis.
